Checked baggage dimensions and weight average
Most South American airlines have implemented a class system that determines what kind of baggage can you carry free of charge. For example if you buy the ticket for the most inexpensive class, you will usually be able to bring only one carry-on, or sometimes not even that. If you fly in business class on the other hand, you can bring two peaces of carry-on and two pieces of checked baggage without any extra charge.
Average South American airline checked baggage requirements differ from one company to another with an average below. Averages include international and not domestic flights.
Average for most airlines: sum of height, length and width must not exceed 158cm (62″)
Almost always there is a separate price list for checked baggage and the cost is not included in the price of the airplane ticket. Weight classes vary to with different airlines and should be checked before flight.
Maximum average weight: 32kg
Maximum average weight premium class: 4x32kg
Minimum average weight: 15kg
Average excess and overweight fees
Carry-on
Additional carry-on pieces can usually be reserved when buying the plane ticket, which is cheaper than at the last minute at the airport. Prices vary from one airline to another, where one airline can have 2 carry-on piece allowance and the second airline charges even for the first one.
Checked baggage
Average rates for checked baggage bought with an airplane ticket are between 1 USD – 10 USD per kg, but prices for additional baggage or overweight baggage can skyrocket at the airport withe the price tag of 300 USD.
Price for an excess bag can be usually calculated with weight system (per kg), or piece system (per piece). Costs per kg vary between 2 USD per kg and all the way to 10 USD per kg.
Costs per piece vary between 20 USD and 100 USD per piece if bought in advance.
Some airlines have a flat fee for all checked baggage exceeding weight requirement from as low as 30 USD to 170USD. The flat fee can be applied even in the event that the checked baggage weight limit is exceeded for only 1kg. Usually cheaper providers are more likely to charge the passenger in the event of excess weight.
South American airlines baggage restrictions
All commercial airlines have a list of items that are not allowed for either carry-on baggage or checked baggage due to safety or other reasons. such items are:
- Edged or blunt self defense instruments
- Firearms
- Explosives and explosive substances
- chemical and toxic substances
- live plants
Special consideration has to be made when traveling with lithium battery powered items such as electric scooters, smart luggage, segways, spare lithium batteries. Capacity of the battery usually determines if the item can be brought on a flight or not, where the maximum is mostly around 100Wh. Some items powered with lithium batteries can be banned from carry-on, checked baggage or both, no matter the battery size.

Pet policy
Pet policy depends exclusively on an Airline. Most of airlines that do accept animals will accept only a dog or a cat. Some airlines accept birds.
Vast majority of airlines allow pets on their flights. Some airlines transfer your pets as checked baggage, some can take it as a carry-on baggage and some as both. Be sure to check weight limitations of selected airlines if you wish to transfer your pet as a carry-on. E
Airlines that will accept your pet as a carry-on usually require a size limit of a regular carry-on; 55cm (21″) x 40cm (16″) x 23cm (9″). Combined weight of the container and your pet must also not exceed the maximum stated weight of a carry-on in the range between 7kg and 10kg.
Fees
Most South American airlines will not include the weight of your pet in your baggage allowance, therefore excess baggage charges will be applied for the combined weight of your pet and the cage.
Fees as carry-on: 30-170 USD
Fees as checked baggage: 50-350 USD
If your pet can comfortably fit in to a container that is not bigger than a carry-on, it if usually cheaper to transfer them as additional carry-on. Flying your pet next to you can also be less stressful for the pet.
Be advised that there is also a maximum number of cages that can be checked in by a customer , and a maximum number of pet containers that can be accepted on a certain airplane, depending on the available space. Maximum number of cages for one customer is in most cases two.
