Carry-on dimensions and weight average
Traveling with some European airlines includes a free carry-on baggage. Dimensions differ from one company to another but in general the carry-on has to be smaller that dimensions of the overhead bin and/or space under the seat in front of the passenger. Generally dimensions are:
Maximum: height 55cm (21″) x length 40cm (16″) x width 25cm (10″)
Minimum: height 35cm (14″) x length 20cm (8″) x width 20cm (8″)
Maximum average weight: 10kg
Minimum average weight: 7kg
Checked baggage dimensions and weight average
Most European airlines have implemented a class system that determines what kind of baggage can you carry free of charge. For example if you buy the ticket for the most inexpensive class, you will usually be able to bring only one carry-on, or not even that. If you fly in business class on the other hand, you can bring two peaces of carry-on and two pieces of checked baggage without any extra charge.
That means that even if you are able to find a dirt cheap ticket from one destination to another, when you will add one carry-on and one checked baggage, that same ticket could not look as affordable as it did at the start. That of course does not apply if you do not need any baggage for your trip.
Average European airline checked baggage requirements differ from one company to another with an average below. Averages include international and not domestic flights.
Maximum: height 250cm (98″) x length 79cm (31″) x width 112cm (44″)
Minimum: sum of height, length and width must be less than 155cm (61″)
Almost always there is a separate price list for checked baggage and the cost is not included in the price of the airplane ticket. Weight classes vary to great extent with different airlines and should be checked before flight.
Maximum average weight: 32kg
Maximum average weight premium class: 75kg
Minimum average weight: 10kg
Average excess and overweight fees
Carry-on
Additional carry-on pieces can usually be reserved when buying the plane ticket, which is cheaper than at the last minute at the airport. Prices vary from one airline to another, where one airline can have 2 carry-on piece allowance and the second airline charges even for the first one (almost all budget airlines).
Checked baggage
Average rates for checked baggage bought with an airplane ticket are between 1 USD – 15 USD per kg, but prices for additional baggage or overweight baggage can skyrocket at the airport.
Price for an excess bag can be usually calculated with weight system (per kg), or piece system (per piece). Costs per kg vary between 1 USD per kg and all the way to 50 USD per kg.
Costs per piece vary between 20 USD per piece and 280 USD per piece.
Some airlines have a flat fee for all checked baggage exceeding weight requirement from as low as 20 USD to 150USD. The flat fee can be applied even in the event that the checked baggage weight limit is exceeded for only 1kg. Usually cheaper providers are more likely to charge the passenger in the event of excess weight.
European airlines baggage restrictions
All commercial airlines have a list of items that are not allowed for either carry-on baggage or checked baggage due to safety or other reasons. such items are:
- Edged or blunt self defense instruments
- Firearms
- Explosives and explosive substances
- chemical and toxic substances
- live plants
Special consideration has to be made when traveling with lithium battery powered items such as electric scooters, smart luggage, segways, spare lithium batteries. Capacity of the battery usually determines if the item can be brought on a flight or not, where the maximum is mostly around 100Wh. Some items powered with lithium batteries can be banned from carry-on, checked baggage or both, no matter the battery size.

Pet policy
Pet policy depends exclusively on an Airline. Most of airlines that do accept animals will accept only a dog or a cat.
Vast majority of airlines allow pets on their flights. Some airlines transfer your pets as checked baggage, some can take it as a carry-on baggage and some as both. Be sure to check weight limitations of selected airlines if you wish to transfer your pet as a carry-on. Eurowings for example can transfer your pet as a carry-on only and a maximum number of pets per passenger in only one.
Airlines that will accept your pet as a carry-on usually require a size limit of a regular carry-on; 55cm (21″) x 40cm (16″) x 23cm (9″), or the smaller version used at a smaller percentage of airlines; 48cm (19″) x 35cm (14″) x 22cm (8″). Combined weight of the container and your pet must also not exceed the maximum stated weight of a carry-on in the range between 8kg and 10kg.
Fees
Most European airlines will not include the weight of your pet in your baggage allowance, therefore excess baggage charges will be applied for the combined weight of your pet and the cage.
Fees as carry-on: 25-150 USD
Fees as checked baggage: 80-380 USD
If your pet can comfortably fit in to a container that is not bigger than a carry-on, it if usually cheaper to transfer them as additional carry-on. Flying your pet next to you can also be less stressful for the pet.
Be advised that there is also a maximum number of cages that can be checked in by a customer , and a maximum number of pet containers that can be accepted on a certain airplane, depending on the available space. Maximum number of cages for one customer is in most cases two.
