Maximum: height 56cm (22″) x length 45cm (18″) x width 25cm (10″)

Minimum: height 50cm (20″) x length 40cm (16″) x width 20cm (8″)

Minimum: height 90cm (35″) x length 40cm (16″) x width 28cm (11″)

Almost always there is a separate price list for checked baggage and the cost is not included in the price of the airplane ticket. Weight classes vary to great extent with different airlines and should be checked before flight.

Maximum average weight: 50kg

Maximum average weight premium class: 70kg

Minimum average weight: 15kg

Different than carry-on baggage, checked baggage includes other limitations with most Asian airlines, including minimal requirements for checked baggage. If checked baggage is below those requirements it will not be accepted:

Minimal dimensions: height 20cm (8″) x length 15cm (6″) x width 5cm (2″)

Minimal weight: 2kg

Average excess and overweight fees

Carry-on

Additional carry-on pieces can usually be reserved when buying the plane ticket, which is cheaper than at the last minute at the airport. Prices vary grately from one airline to another, where one airline can have 2 carry-on piece allowance and the second airline charges even for the first one.

Checked baggage

Average rates for checked baggage bought with an airplane ticket are between 1 USD – 3 USD per kg, but prices for additional baggage or overweight baggage can skyrocket at the airport.

Price for an excess bag can be usually calculated with weight system (per kg), or piece system (per piece). Costs per kg vary between 5 USD per kg and all the way to 60 USD per kg.

Costs per piece vary between 50 USD per piece and 250 USD per piece.

Some airlines have a flat fee for all checked baggage exceeding weight requirement from as low as 20 USD to 150USD. The flat fee can be applied even in the event that the checked baggage weight limit is exceeded for only 1kg. Usually cheaper providers are more likely to charge the passenger in the event of excess weight.

Asian airlines baggage restrictions

All commercial airlines have a list of items that are not allowed for either carry-on baggage or checked baggage due to safety or other reasons. such items are:

  • Edged or blunt self defense instruments
  • Firearms
  • Explosives and explosive substances
  • chemical and toxic substances
  • live plants

Special consideration has to be made when traveling with lithium battery powered items such as electric scooters, smart luggage, segways, spare lithium batteries. Capacity of the battery usually determines if the item can be brought on a flight or not, where the maximum is mostly around 160Wh. Some items powered with lithium batteries can be banned from carry-on, checked baggage or both, no matter the battery size.

Each Asian airline has a list of goods that can or can not be transported in your baggage. The list can include everything: from requirements for traveling with smart luggage, to ban of transfer of durian fruit.

Pet policy

Pet policy depends exclusively on an Airline. Most of airlines that do accept animals will accept only a dog or a cat.

Airlines such as AirAsia have a strict no-pet policy with an only exception for medically certified service dogs for some (not all) destinations.

Airline such as China Air, Bangkok Airways, Singapore Air will accommodate your pet. Some airlines transfer your pets as checked baggage, some can take it as a carry-on baggage and some as both. Be sure to check weight limitations of selected airlines if you wish to transfer your pet as a carry-on.

Fees

Most Asian airlines will not include the weight of your pet in your baggage allowance, therefore excess baggage charges will be applied for the combined weight of your pet and the cage.

Be advised that there is also a maximum number of cages that can be checked in by a customer (usually two), and a maximum number of pet containers that can be accepted on a certain airplane, depending on the available space.
